Lady Chatterley's Lover

by Lawrence, D. H./ Squires, Michael (EDT)/ Lessing, Doris May (INT)
Banned for eroticism and crossing class lines

This controversial novel has been banned in multiple countries since its original publication in 1928. "Lady Chatterley's Lover" is a moving story of an upper-class woman whose husband has been paralyzed from the waist down. She is stifled by his lack of physical and sexual attention, and cannot stand his classist superior attitude. Enter the groundskeeper - a "salt of the earth" sort of character - manly, brusque, unapologetically sensual. By crossing societal barriers and following their instincts rather than their upbringings, these two are able to find satisfaction and romance (albeit in a secretive manner). By turns erotic and subtle, "Lady Chatterley's Lover" is a novel that gives hope to the hopeless romantic, and restores one's faith in the physical/instinctive side of human nature. In 1993, the BBC produced a mini-series version of the story called, "Lady Chatterley," starring Joely Richardson and Sean Bean - well worth watching after reading the book.
